Quantum Mechanical Model

Today we learned about the quantum mechanical model of an atom, I guess.  We also learned about other things.

  1. No one knows where electrons actually are.
  2. Time travel is possible.
  3. You guys need to watch more Star Trek.

Light

After going over the test, we didn't have a whole lot of time left, but we did talk a bit about light.

  1. speed = wavelength x frequency
  2. Energy of a photon = Plank's constant x frequency

Unit 3 Exam

Well, it's clearly our lowest scoring exam so far.  That's to be expected.  Chemistry gets harder.

I am sorry for those of you whose day was ruined.  I am not sorry for the test itself.  The AP test is very tricky and very difficult and we need to get into shape.

That being said, this was the first time that we saw an actual AP FRQ.  I suppose it would be unfair of me to grade as if you should have known what to expect (although I did mention that I would probably draw questions from old AP Exams).

For this test and this test only, I will allow test corrections.  This will allow you to regain half of the points that you lost.

Example:  You made a 70 after the curve.  You complete corrections and can make up to an 85.  We'll go over this process next time in class.

Don't forget the lab tomorrow.

Homework:
Read chapter 7.  Complete the review questions at the end of the chapter.  Remember to supply the context for the problem, not just an answer.

Last bit of Thermochemistry

Today we reviewed:

  1. Calorimetry
  2. Hess's Law
  3. Standard Enthalpies of Formation
There is a test next time.

Thermodynamics

Today we:
  1. Went over the exam
  2. Reviewed energy concepts
  3. Did some simple energy problems
  4. Began calorimetry
Next class, I will be gone for the junior retreat.  Please work diligently and get through "Standard Enthalpies of Formation"

Homework:

Unit 2 Exam

Done with gas laws... for now.

The next chapter is about thermochemistry.  There's a really cool (get it?) documentary about temperature that you should watch if you have the time.  Nova: Absolute Zero

Homework:
Read chapter 6 and answer the review questions on page 284

More Gas Law Practice

Just a few things were left.

  1. KMT
  2. Effusion
  3. We also froze a balloon with liquid N2.
There is a test next time.

Molar Gas Things

Today we covered some molely things related to gases.

  1. Molar volume of a gas
  2. Molar density of a gas
  3. Partial pressure
  4. Mole fraction (not actually a fraction)
And we combined gas laws together with everything else!  Hooray!

Gas Laws

Pretty simple today.

  1. We went over the exam
  2. We reviewed gas laws (seems good so far).
We'll go over more complex things like partial pressure next time.

Unit 1 Exam

First real exam done!  I should have them graded by next class.  Then, we'll quickly go over them and start the new unit.

It's another short one, so be ready to move.

Homework:
Read Chapter 5 and answer the review questions on page 231
