Molecular Orbits

Here's what you need to know from today.

  1. Linear = sp hybridization
  2. Trigonal planar = sp2 hybridization
  3. Tetrahedral = sp3 hybridization
  4. Single = sigma
  5. Double = sigma + pi
  6. Triple = sigma + 2 pi
  7. Molecular orbital theory is confusing, but you don't really have to use it on the AP test

Homework:
Chapter 8 AP Review Questions (Chapter 9 as well if you feel like it)

VSEPR

Valence Shell Electron Repulsion Model

3D structure around an atom

Powerful for most applications.

Homework:
Read the chapter 9.  Answer the 10 review questions at the end.
You may also want to practice some VSEPR structures.

Lewis Structures

  1. Lewis Structures used to be easy(ish).
  2. Except:
    1. Boron and beryllium can go under the octet rule.
    2. And anything in n=3 or higher can go over the octet rule.
    3. Also, resonance
      1. Sible bonds
    4. Also, some compounds could have multiple structures
      1. Use formal charges to work it out.
  3. You really need to read the chapter before you come to class.

Bonds

  1. Bonds are a model.
  2. You can use them to estimate enthalpy.
  3. Lewis diagrams should be review for now.

Unit 4 Exam

So, that's the exam on atomic structure.  Bonding is next.

Homework:
You should be reading Chapter 10 and doing the review questions on page 403.  However, what with the senior retreat, I won't be grading these this time.  You should still do them though.

  1. PES (easy)
  2. MS (easy)
  3. Beer's Law (also easy, but we didn't do much with it yet)
More information on Beer's Law in section A17 in your book.  Here's some practice using this equation.

Homework:
  Chapter 7 AP Review Questions
